NordVPN review: audits, trust, UK legality and limits

In brief
NordVPN is a paid VPN: it encrypts the connection between your device and one of its servers, so people on the same Wi-Fi network cannot read your traffic and the sites you visit see the server's address instead of yours. Using a VPN does not make you anonymous or protect you from phishing, malware or weak passwords, and it moves trust from your internet provider to the VPN company, which is why independent checks of its no-logs claims matter. NordVPN says its sixth no-logs assessment was carried out by Deloitte Lithuania in late 2025, and its UK Trustpilot page (October 2026) shows 4.2 out of 5 from 51,191 reviews. For ordinary privacy, such as securing a connection on public Wi-Fi, a VPN is a normal choice in the UK.
Who it suits: people who regularly use public Wi-Fi, travellers, and anyone who wants their internet provider not to see the sites they visit. Who it does not suit: people looking for a free VPN, or who expect a VPN to replace antivirus software, a password manager or careful habits.

What does a VPN actually do?
A VPN builds an encrypted tunnel between your device and a server run by the provider. Your data goes through the tunnel before reaching the internet. In practice:
- On public Wi-Fi, such as in a café, hotel or airport, other users of the network cannot read what passes through the tunnel.
- Your internet provider no longer sees the list of sites you visit, but the VPN company can. You are moving trust, not removing it.
- The websites you visit see the VPN server's address, not your home address.
What it does not do: it does not stop you giving your password to a fake website, it does not remove malware and it does not make you anonymous if you sign in to accounts in your own name. A VPN is one layer, not a complete defence.
What do the main VPN terms mean?
- No-logs claim: the provider's statement that it does not keep records of what you do online. It is a promise, so the useful question is who has checked it.
- Assurance engagement: a review by an independent firm against a recognised standard. NordVPN's most recent one followed ISAE 3000 (Revised), a general assurance standard. It is narrower than a full security audit of every line of code.
- Server types: providers run several kinds of server. Deloitte's review, as NordVPN describes it, covered standard VPN servers, Double VPN, obfuscated servers and Onion Over VPN.
- Account security: a VPN protects the connection, while the security of your accounts still depends on strong passwords and two-step verification. Our guide to the best password manager → explains how to set that up.
Is NordVPN still trustworthy?
Trust in a VPN rests on three things you can check: what the provider claims, what independent parties have verified and what ordinary customers report.
What the provider claims. NordVPN says it keeps no logs of your activity. Its About page also presents the company as a founding member of the VPN Trust Initiative. A claim of this kind is only as good as the checks behind it, which is the next point.
What an audit can and cannot show. According to NordVPN's blog post of 3 February 2026 on its sixth no-logs assessment, Deloitte Lithuania carried out an independent assurance engagement under the ISAE 3000 (Revised) standard, with fieldwork from 10 November to 12 December 2025 and a report dated 12 December 2025. The company says it does not publish the full report, which logged-in users can read in their Nord Account. An assurance engagement describes how systems were set up and operated during the period reviewed. It is commissioned by the provider, it covers a window in time, and it does not guarantee future behaviour. It is better evidence than an unsupported promise, and weaker than a legal ruling or a repeated pattern of verified incidents. Before you subscribe, also search for recent news about security incidents and read how the company responded.
What customers report. The UK Trustpilot page (October 2026) shows a TrustScore of 4.2 out of 5 from 51,191 reviews, 6,916 of them in the last twelve months. About 72% are five-star and 12% are one-star. The page's AI summary, based on 5,892 recent reviews, praises speed, reliability and simple set-up across household devices and often-helpful staff, and lists connection drops, slow servers and interruptions, especially abroad, together with criticism of chatbot interactions, long waits and difficulty obtaining refunds after the guarantee period. These are individual accounts, and Trustpilot does not verify the facts in them.

Is it legal to use a VPN in the UK?
Using a VPN for ordinary privacy, such as securing a connection on public Wi-Fi, is a normal choice. Laws change, so check GOV.UK for the current position before you rely on any summary, including this one. A VPN does not make an unlawful act lawful.
Does NordVPN have a free plan?
Plan on paying, since NordVPN is a paid VPN. What exists instead is a money-back guarantee of 30 days for new subscriptions, described on NordVPN's support site (October 2026), which works as a trial if you request the refund in time. The conditions are in the section below.
Because UK consumers also have statutory rights, it is worth knowing the basics. Citizens Advice explains a 14-day cooling-off period for things you buy without seeing them in person, starting the day after you receive your order. For a subscription, the provider's terms say what applies, so treat the 30-day guarantee as your main safety net. Whatever you choose, make a note of the date you subscribed, the renewal date and how to cancel.
What should you check before paying for NordVPN?
No price is quoted here, because offers change and renewal prices can differ from the first-period price. Open the official page and note:
- The price of the first period and the price at renewal.
- The length of the commitment.
- What each plan includes: the VPN alone, or other security tools.
- How many devices you can connect at once.
- How to cancel, and whether renewal is automatic.
- The refund conditions and the time limit.
No promo codes are listed on this page.

How does the NordVPN money-back guarantee work?
NordVPN's refund policy article (support.nordvpn.com, October 2026) sets out the conditions:
| Point | What the article says |
|---|---|
| Length | 30 days for new subscriptions |
| What it covers | The initial purchase only, not renewals, unless local law says otherwise |
| How to ask | Through the live chat on the support site, which links to the account page where a Refund button appears for eligible payments |
| Paid through Apple's App Store | Ask Apple |
| Paid through the Amazon Appstore | Ask Amazon |
| Paid through Google Play | Ask the support team within the guarantee terms, or ask Google Play directly within the first 48 hours |
| Paid through a reseller | Ask the reseller |
| Processing | Up to 4 hours, then up to 10 business days for the money to arrive, depending on the payment method |
Two practical points follow. First, the guarantee runs from the first purchase, so a renewal a year later is not covered by it. Second, where you paid decides who handles the refund, so write down how you subscribed. Cancelling automatic renewal is a separate procedure described in a different article, and cancelling is not the same thing as asking for a refund.

What did the independent assessment actually cover?
The assessment is the main reason NordVPN appears in trust discussions, so its limits are worth stating plainly. The standard used is ISAE 3000 (Revised). The fieldwork ran from 10 November to 12 December 2025 and the report is dated 12 December 2025. NordVPN calls it its sixth assessment. The servers reviewed, as NordVPN describes them, include standard VPN, Double VPN, obfuscated servers and Onion Over VPN.
Three limits stay in place whatever the headline says. The result is a snapshot of one period, not a promise about the future. The company chose and paid for the reviewer. And the full report is available only to people with a Nord Account, so a reader cannot check the whole document before subscribing. None of this makes the assessment worthless: a repeated, dated, independent review is more informative than a bare claim. It simply belongs alongside the other checks: recent news, the terms of service and what customers say.

What are the main strengths and weaknesses of NordVPN?
Strengths documented in public sources
- A provider that has put its no-logs claims through repeated independent assessments, according to its own blog.
- A strong score and a large number of reviews on Trustpilot UK, with speed and ease of use among the most-cited positives.
- One account usable across several devices, subject to the plan.
- A clear refund policy for the first purchase.
Limits documented in public sources
- A paid service, with no free plan.
- A VPN moves trust to its provider, and an assessment is a snapshot.
- The full assessment report is available only inside the account.
- Reviewers report connection drops and slow servers in some cases, especially abroad.
- Complaints about getting a refund after the guarantee window.
What should you do if NordVPN will not connect?
Check NordVPN's own help centre first and follow its procedure rather than a third-party tip. The usual checks for any VPN apply: choose another server, try another protocol, confirm that your subscription is active, look at whether a firewall or antivirus is interfering, make sure the date and time on your device are correct and check that your internet connection works without the VPN. Contact the provider's support from within the app if the problem persists.
Is there a better VPN than NordVPN?
"Better" depends on what you value: price at renewal, number of devices, ease of use, independent assessments, jurisdiction and the quality of support. The related search "NordVPN vs ExpressVPN" is popular in the UK, but ExpressVPN is not assessed here and no providers are ranked. Use the checklist above on each candidate and compare like with like. If you want a second reference for how an audit-based claim is presented, see our Proton Pass review →, which applies the same method to a password manager.
Is NordVPN worth it?
It is worth considering if you often use networks you do not control and you want a mainstream provider with independent assessments and strong customer feedback, and if you read the renewal and refund terms first. It is not worth it if you are looking for anonymity, for a free tool or for a fix for security problems a VPN cannot touch.
| Profile | What a VPN adds | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Regular traveller | A protected connection on hotel, airport and café Wi-Fi | Device count, renewal price, and the refund window if the trip is short |
| Remote worker in cafés | An encrypted tunnel for work traffic on shared networks | Your employer's own security policy comes first |
| Household with several devices | One account across several devices, subject to the plan | How many devices the plan allows at once |
| Someone seeking anonymity | Little: accounts in your own name still identify you | Whether a VPN is the right tool at all |
| Someone who wants a free tool | Nothing, since there is no free plan | The 30-day guarantee as a trial, if you request it in time |

Frequently asked questions
Is NordVPN still trustworthy?
NordVPN says its no-logs claims have been independently assessed several times, most recently by Deloitte Lithuania in late 2025, and it has a 4.2 out of 5 score on Trustpilot UK. An assessment is a snapshot, so read recent news and the terms.
Is NordVPN legal in the UK?
Using a VPN for ordinary privacy is a normal choice. Check GOV.UK for the current position, and remember that a VPN does not make an unlawful act lawful.
Is it worth it to use NordVPN?
It makes sense if you regularly use public Wi-Fi and want an extra layer of privacy, provided you accept the renewal and refund terms. It does not replace antivirus software or a password manager.
What are the downsides of using NordVPN?
No free plan, trust placed in a provider, and customer reports of connection drops and slow servers in some cases and of difficulty with refunds after the guarantee period.
Is there a better VPN than NordVPN?
There is no universal answer. Compare renewal price, devices, independent assessments and support for your own use.
Is NordVPN free?
No. A 30-day money-back guarantee applies to new subscriptions, so it can work as a trial if you ask for the refund in time.
